The public has an extra two weeks to comment on the environmental impact report for a massive housing development in Copperopolis.
Yesterday, the Calaveras County Planning Commission voted to extend the public comment period on the Oak Canyon Ranch EIR until June 23. Today would have been the deadline.
Commissioners were responding to a public hearing two weeks ago, when a few county residents who had questions about the EIR asked for a longer comment period.
For the past month, people have been mailing their questions and concerns about the EIR to the county-hired consultant who prepared the huge document.
Oak Canyon Ranch is a proposed 2,275-house development on 3,251 acres south of Highway 4 along Little John Road.
Plans call for two golf courses and a resort area with restaurants, shops and 1,200 "resort units," including 400 for full-time residences and 800 for tourist accommodations, such as hotel rooms and time shares.
An EIR is required by state law for any project that could have a significant impact on its surroundings, either immediately or in the future. It examines how a development would affect issues such as traffic, air, soil and water quality, wildlife, noise, agriculture and public services such as police and fire departments.
Oak Canyon Ranch developers at yesterday's meeting did not object to lengthening the comment period.
