UPA looks to recover from winter

Winter took its toll on Utica Power Authority equipment.

During last night's brief board meeting, General Manager Vern Pyle described steps taken to recover from several storms.

Pyle said lightning strikes destroyed data-logging systems, emergency alarms and part of a telephone system, and a fallen tree had crushed a building at Hunter's Dam that contained some equipment.

Pyle told the board that the cost of reconstructing the crushed building would be covered by insurance.

"The equipment was so outdated, we couldn't replace it, so we're buying all new," Pyle told the board.

He said the emergency alarm system being replaced alerts UPA operators if there is a sudden, dramatic change in the water level at Hunter's Dam.

Pyle also reported that UPA earned $73,135 in April from power sales.

A two-hour closed session before last night's official board meeting dealt with four cases of anticipated litigation, but UPA attorney Chris Williams announced that no action was taken on any of the cases.
