Skate park proposed in Twain Harte

More than two years in the making, Linda Garcia and a dozen others will once again approach the Twain Harte Community Services District with their plan to build a skatepark in Eproson Park.

But Garcia is expecting some opposition.

When the park proponents first went in front of the district more than two years ago, they were told there was no money in the district's park and recreation budget, so everything would have to be done with donated money.

The group was given two years to raise $50,000. When the two-year mark came, Garcia said, the group "was a far cry" from having enough the group has promises that amount to about $43,000, but no actual money until the plan is approved.

"We thought we'd made wonderful strides," Garcia said. "We wanted another year."

In February, the group asked the district for an extra year, but was declined.

However, the district said if the group raised enough to put the skate park together, it should come back for reconsideration.

And after an anonymous donor pitched in some cash, that is what the group is doing tomorrow.

"Basically, they're asking if (the district's Board of Directors) are in favor of this or not," said Don Kasso, district manager.

Garcia said some district board members might vote down the park because they aren't happy with the location, liability that comes with a skate park or just the public perception of skateboarders.

"These kids spend many hours perfecting a skill we don't understand," Garcia said. "I think it's really something these kids can embrace."

In other business, the board will also discuss possible water and sewer price increases.

Kasso said because Tuolumne Utilities District prices are likely going up, and because Twain Harte relies on TUD to process its sewage, it is only logical the district's prices will go up as well.
