Head over hops

The 75th Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee got under way yesterday as kids competed in the 12-and-under division at Frogtown in Angels Camp. "Sponge Frog," "Miss Big Jump," "Crazy Legs" and many others took mighty leaps as they were egged on with whistles, yells and stomps. About 200 kids entered the competition, and while some kids brought their own bullfrogs, 350 "rent-a-frogs" were also on hand, and will be used for the remaining three days of jumps. The first-place winner from the kids' competition will receive a trophy and move onto Sunday's finals. Trying a new strategy, IZ Yerington, 4, of Twain Harte blocks his frog from jumping in the wrong direction.
