Twain Harte arch gets repairs

By ERIN MAYES

Twain Harte's landmark arch is being rebuilt more than a year after it was knocked off its foundation by a car during a snowstorm.

The town's Rotary Club has hired Steve Kurgan to oversee work on the stone-and-wood structure, and Ken Story will install electrical wires.

Kurgan, who owns Woody's Log Furniture on Cedar Drive in Twain Harte, said he designed the new arch with more rocks and logs incorporated into the columns. He agreed to take the job on for far less than any other contractor would have charged, he said.

"We were just trying to do something good for downtown Twain Harte," Kurgan said.

This is the fourth time the arch has been rebuilt, said Jerrie Rhine, office manager for the Twain Harte Area Chamber of Commerce. It was originally put up in 1933 and last repaired in 1970. The newest version should be completed by Memorial Day May 26 Rhine said.

Additionally, the stonework surrounding the tree that's traditionally lit up near the arch for Christmas will undergo improvements in September.

All of the work for both projects is being completed by volunteers, Rhine said.

"Volunteers are actually building it," she said. "You have never met such a warm and welcoming community and a community that's willing to help do anything."
