A rebate is available to Calaveras County residents who control yellow starthistle on their properties between Jan. 1 and June 30.

Rebates are given through the county Department of Agriculture. Checks will be mailed out at the end of the year or the beginning of next year.

To be eligible for the rebate, control methods must conform to those outlined in the University of California Publication 21541.

The amount of each rebate varies from person to person they depend on how many acres each applicant has treated and the number of county residents applying for rebates.

Last year, the rebate was about $8 per acre. However, the county doesn't send out rebates for less than $10.

Rebate funding comes from the state, which provides money for areas where weed control is needed.

Rebate applications must be requested from the Calaveras County Department of Agriculture. Applications must be dropped off or mailed to the department office by 5 p.m. Friday, July 18.

The office is at the Calaveras County Government Center at 891 Mountain Ranch Road in San Andreas.

Call 754-6504.
