Bret Harte High School drama students are building sets, rehearsing songs and getting ready for their big spring production, the murder-mystery/musical "Something's Afoot."

The musical is based on Agatha Christie's "Ten Little Indians," a play in which 10 people are invited to a secluded house and killed one by one by an unseen

murderer.

An American spoof of the British whodunit, Bret Harte drama director Nicholas Gorne calls it "Agatha Christie meets 'Clue.'

"Just when you think it can't get any funnier, it does."

Gorne said he chose the musical comedy for his students because he has an emotional attachment to it: It is the first high school musical he ever saw.

"In 1992, my sister was in it, and it's the first musical that got me involved," he said.

Gorne said the 30 students participating in the play, including the cast and crew, have been working on the show since mid-January.

Last night, dress rehearsal went down in the Bret Harte Performing Arts Theater.

Sophomore Caitlin Tennant plays the "saucy maid," Lettie.

"I play a servant," she said, "but I do live pretty long. I make it through the second act."

Other actors jokingly said they rate the various characters by how long they stay alive.

Junior Kayla Northington is one of two girls who play the character Hope Langdon.

"I'm the ingenue. I get the boy, and I die with the boy."

This is Rob Lawson's eighth play. A junior, Lawson said he plans on becoming a theater arts teacher.

"But film is always in the back of my mind," he said. He portrays the character Col.Gilweather.

Juniors Ann Mazzaferro and Stephanie Waslohn both play Miss Tweed.

Waslohn said she likes drama because "it's a very interesting way to do physical activity and at the same time challenge your mind."
