Board to consider student projections

A Sacramento-based company has studied how growth in Copperopolis will affect Mark Twain Union Elementary School District.

At 4:30 p.m. tomorrow, the district board will learn of the firm's findings.

The board hired SchoolWorks earlier this year to come up with projections about how many students will live in the district in five years. Such projections could make the district eligible for funds for state modernization projects.

"It's just a study session for them to present to the board what they've found out so far what they see happening five years out, according to the data they've collected," District Superintendent Rick Brewer said.

The Mark Twain Union Elementary School District has two campuses Mark Twain Union Elementary School in Angels Camp and Copperopolis Elementary School.

Brewer said the district is more curious about growth in Copperopolis.

Large subdivisions such as Saddle Creek and Copper Cove already have created hundreds of new houses in Copperopolis. And two large subdivisions Tuscany Hills and Oak Canyon Ranch are in the planning stages.

Oak Canyon Ranch has plans for at least 2,275 houses, and Tuscany Hills is proposing 335 houses.

Growth is already evident at Copperopolis Elementary School. The school's student population jumped to 253 this year from 218 last year.

"They will give rough estimates on incoming students from existing and proposed subdivisions," Brewer said.
