Actor Robert Conrad of Bear Valley was arrested on a felony drunken driving charge after crashing head-on into another car on Highway 4 near Arnold Monday night.
Conrad, 73, was alone in his eastbound, green 1995 Jaguar around 7:15 p.m. when he drifted into the wrong lane and crashed into a car driven by Kevin Burnett, 26, of Forest Meadows. Both Conrad and Burnett were taken by air ambulances to Modesto hospitals with injuries.
Burnett was listed in stable condition this morning at Memorial Medical Center, but hospital spokeswoman Wendy Pinto said Burnett asked not to speak to anyone about the accident.
According to a California Highway Patrol report, Conrad was flown to Doctor's Medical Center. But a hospital spokeswoman said Conrad is not listed as a patient there, and calls to a second home in the Angels Camp-Murphys area that Conrad and his family also have were not returned.
''I understand that he's stable. His family is with him,'' Donna Gaba, who works for Conrad's agent, David Shapira, told The Associated Press yesterday.
Highway Patrol Officer Michael Brown investigated the accident, about a mile west of Arnold. "Due to Conrad's intoxicated condition, he allowed his vehicle to drift over the center line," Brown said in the CHP report.
Officer Jan Nichols of the San Andreas Highway Patrol office said Brown could smell alcohol on Conrad's breath.
Conrad was arrested later Monday night at the hospital by a Modesto-area CHP officer and blood was drawn for alcohol content analysis. Test results may not be known for up to two weeks, said Nichols.
"It is normal for us to arrest someone at the hospital if their injuries prevent them from being booked into the jail," Nichols said. "They are given a date to appear in court later."
Nichols said Conrad's injuries were considered moderate to severe, but would not elaborate. She did not know what date he would appear in Calaveras County Superior Court.
