A 45-year-old Copperopolis woman will organize a committee to study issues in Calaveras County's 5th supervisorial district.

Appointed by District Supervisor 5 Victoria Erickson, Betsy Duncan hesitates to call herself the committee leader. But it will be her job to set meetings and recruit other district residents to help her out.

What the panel studies will depend on what happens in monthly District 5 town hall meetings, which will start later this month. At the town hall meetings, the committee will listen to questions from the audience and try to answer them at later meetings.

District 5 includes Copperopolis to the south and Valley Springs, La Contenta, Rancho Calaveras and Jenny Lind to the north.

Duncan's committee will hold its first meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday in Copperopolis. For more information, call her at 785-3017.

"Anyone who wants to make a commitment to be a part of this group is welcome to do so," said Duncan, a real estate agent for Century 21 Lake Tulloch. "But we're going to have to limit, to some extent, how many people can be there."

Duncan said people who can attend more meetings would be more likely to remain on the committee.

"I'm excited about it," said Duncan. "I'm hoping we'll see diverse people and diverse opinions coming together for a common cause."

Duncan worked as a sales associate for Saddle Creek in Copperopolis for more than two years, making her "familiar with new communities and how they grow," she said.

Duncan said she met District 5 Supervisor Victoria Erickson last year while Erickson was campaigning for the supervisorial seat.

"We're both very receptive to other people's ideas, and I think that's why she chose me."
