Carpet of blooms

Fields of golden poppies crown the base of Table Mountain near Yosemite Junction. These fields are interspersed with other yellow wildflowers, such as goldfinger, and thanks to the warm weather lately, they are all showing their faces. The poppy has a long history in the Sierra Nevada foothills, and not just for its beauty. Native Americans in the northern Sacramento Valley used to boil and eat the greens. In March 1903, the golden poppy was designated as California's state flower. The perennial is one of the earliest wildflowers to bloom.
