Hospital plan still under board review

Tuolumne General Hospital Administrator Barry Woerman this afternoon will update the hospital's board of trustees executive financial planning committee on his recovery plan.

The plan was created to address the financial problems the ailing county hospital has faced over the last six years. The hospital loses money every month, despite almost $6 million in county loans and nearly $11 million in cash infusions from the general fund since 1997.

The recovery plan, which Woerman has been working on since he took the position more than a year ago, was presented to the county board of supervisors Feb. 11. At that meeting, the board asked Woerman and his staff to come back March 4 for further discussion.

At today's meeting, hospital staff will ask the committee to give "conceptual approval" to several ideas listed in the plan to cut costs and increase revenue.

Establishing a separate county fund for the Visiting Nurse Association, expanding the long-term care program by eight beds and hiring a consultant to look at the billing-and-reimbursement-collection process all are on the agenda.
