Resident artist unveils show

The Tuolumne County Arts Alliance's artist in residence, Sarah Anne Graham, will continue her new show, "Paper, Print and Painting," through Sept. 13at the George Post Community Galleryat 251 S. Baretta St.on the historic Sonora Dome campus.

Graham said her latest works come from one series and originate with one image. They are of a woodland scene, carved on wood and printed on various watershed, soil and vegetation taxonomy maps throughout the Northwest.

"Once the woodcut was transferred onto these maps, it was then colored on and cut through, using paper cutting techniques to give the illusion of lace," she said. "This process was done to express the fragility of our local ecosystems, and the role that conservation plays in managing our natural environments."

Other works are based on various themes indicative of Tuolumne County's past and present, its nature, drought, fire and culture, she said.

Graham, a resident of Sonora, graduated from Oregon State University with a bachelor of fine art degree in painting-printmaking in 2003.

She is twice published in CALYX, a collection of women's literary and art work. Her work focuses on landscape paintings, but also incorporates landscapes into still life and other media.

Graham's art has been exhibited throughout the Pacific Northwest, the South and New Zealand.

The Tuolumne County Arts Alliance was founded as the Central Sierra Arts Council in 1970 by Carl Wirth, Dorothy Sylwester, Max Hagameyer and others "to promote the arts and arts education in Tuolumne County, thereby enriching the lives of its residents and visitors." Their inaugural venture was the Sonora Bach Festival.
