Auction marks 25th anniversary

Sierra Waldorf School will celebrate its silver anniversary on Saturday with a masquerade ball.

The school's annual "Rites of Spring Auction," with a theme this year of "By the Light of the Silvery Moon," will begin at 5 p.m. at the Mother Lode Fairgrounds in Sonora.

There will be a full moon that evening to coincide with the event. Dressing up in masquerade is encouraged, although not required.

The 18th annual event will feature a catered dinner by Barbara and Co. from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The live auction will begin at 8 p.m. with dancing to music by Sound Extreme from 9 p.m. to midnight.

A no-host bar will be available for beer, wine and cocktails.

Hundreds of items will be featured in a silent auction.The live auction includes a whitewater rafting trip in Oregon, a nearly new car, handmade chicken coop, custom furniture, gourmet dinner parties and vacation retreats in Santa Cruz and Hawaii.

Tickets are $50, available at the door.

The auction is the school's signature fundraising event of the year.

Past themes have included Paris and Bollywood.

Sierra Waldorf School, at 19234 Rawhide Road in Jamestown, started in 1989 with about 35 students. It is now a thriving school for students in kindergarten through eighth grade with more than 100 families and 161 students from Tuolumne and Calaveras counties.

Sierra Waldorf School is dedicated to cultivating the capacities of each child through a developmental education based on the work of Rudolf Steiner, founder of Waldorf Education.
