Trivia gets red carpet treatment

The Tuolumne County Trivia Bee, held almost annually for the past 14 years, will take place Saturday at the Sonora Opera Hall.

Tickets are $15, available at the main Sonora library at 480 Greenley Road or any of the Tuolumne County Library branches.

Doors will open at 5 p.m.

This year's theme is "Roll Out the Red Carpet for Reading" and participants are encouraged to dress as their favorite award-winning movie or star.

Maryann Curmi will again serve as master of ceremonies.

Lynn McCormick, the principal organizer of the event as well as the county's youth, literacy and outreach librarian, is encouraging area residents to come cheer on their favorite team, including the returning champions, Chapter 391 of the Vietnam Veterans of America Inc.

Three-member teams from a variety of service clubs, government and professional offices also will compete.

"It's impossible to say what makes an ideal team member," McCormick said, "but enthusiasm, some knowledge of local history and geography, and at least a passing acquaintance with what's hot on the entertainment scene, in sports and local government is desirable."

Finger food will be supplied by the Sonora Emblem Club and the Sonora Lions Club will operate the wine and beer bar.

All proceeds of this year's Trivia Bee will be earmarked for the remodeling of the Adult Literacy Services tutoring section in the main Sonora library, making the area wheelchair accessible and compliant with the American with Disabilities Act.

"More than in most years, we are depending on the Trivia Bee audience to help make this upgrade a reality," McCormick said.

The area will be designed with the needs of the adults who utilize the area, McCormick said.

The arrangement will allow for space between study and work desks to provide room for tutors and adult learners to spread their work out while having their confidentiality maintained, she added.

The team entry fee is $200. Call McCormick 694-2727 for availability of space.
