Stage 3 gives life to White House history

Gary Linehan, The Union Democrat

Stage 3 Theatre Company will present a limited run of the one-man play "Looking Over the President's Shoulder" today through Jan. 26 at 208 S. Green St. in downtown Sonora.

Dwight Mahabir will star in the true story of Alonzo Fields, chief butler of the White House for 21 years, from 1932-1953.

Forced by the Depression to give up his dreams of becoming an opera singer, Fields instead accepts a job at the White House, where he quickly becomes chief butler. From his unique insider's perspective, Fields recalls his service to four American presidents - Herbert Hoover, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower - and their families.

Famous guests through the years included Winston Churchhill, Marian Anderson, Errol Flynn and the king and queen of England. As Fields says in the play: "It was like being in the front row and watching the passing parade of history."

Interspersed throughout the play are reminiscences of Fields' life, his family history and his own personal dreams and philosophies.

Playwright James Still also culled material from Fields' private papers, diaries and interviews.

Tickets are $22 for adults and $15 for children, available at the box office, by calling 536-1778 and online at www.stage3.org.

This is not part of Stage 3's regular season, which will begin with "The Whipping Man," by Matthew Lopez, Feb. 21 through March 23.
