Lumber Jubilee returns to Tuolumne

Gary Linehan, The Union Democrat

The 64th annual Tuolumne Lumber Jubilee opens today and continues through Sunday in Tuolumne.

This year's logging events will include ax throwing, hot power saw, stock power saw, choker setting, crosscut sawing, Jack and Jill events, "Bull of the Woods" and tug of war.

"Bull of the Woods" is a rarely seen event featuring two competitors standing toe to toe, duking it out until one of them is knocked off the log on which they are standing. The Tuolumne Lumber Jubilee is one of the only shows in the country that still carries out this event.

"The tug of war is a test of a will, endurance and power and has been the jubilee's main event since its inception," said Cindy Rhorer, one of the event organizers. "Ours is one of two logging shows that still carry out this ultimate feat of strength and as with everything in Tuolumne, we are very proud of its continuing legacy."

Today is Tuolumne Appreciation Day, with carnival rides from 5 to 10 p.m. and live music by One Leg Chuck from 7 to 9 p.m.

Friday will featured the queen coronation ceremony at 6 p.m., along with carnival rides from 3 to 11 p.m. and live music by the 209 All Stars from 7 to 10 p.m.

Saturday will feature the Lumber Jubilee Parade at 10 a.m., followed by carnival rides from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., children's events at 1 p.m., women's events at 2 p.m., hot dog eating contest at 3 p.m., arm wrestling contest at 3:30 p.m., junior tug of war at 4 p.m. and live music by Remedy from 7 to 10 p.m.

Sunday will feature church services at 9 a.m., logging competition signups from 10 to 11:30 a.m., carnival rides from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the logging exhibition at noon, culminating in the tug of war at 4 p.m.

Most events, including entry to the logging exhibition, are free. There is a fee to enter the logging event competition and some other contests.
