Studio 4 Dance Theater will present its 2013 spring showcase on Friday and Saturday, featuring "Sleeping Beauty's Wedding."
Performances will be given at 7 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday the Bret Harte High School Theater in Angels Camp.
The show is an eclectic mix of classic ballet, jazz, hip-hop and contemporary dance, featuring original choreography to familiar classical and popular music.
There are 28 dancers, all students at Studio 4 School of Dance in Vallecito. Audiences will see a reprise of the "Furious Angels" from last year, but most of the this year's dances are brand new.
Long-time Studio 4 Dance student Aeisha Carrillo is assistant directing the show as her senior project for Bret Harte High School, and is also choreographing three dances for the company.
Three other students are also contributing choreography: Candace Collum has choreographed an original contemporary dance; Elise Williams has developed a hip-hop dance and first-time choreographer Elizabeth Ernst has also created a hip-hop piece.
The ballet portion will be an abbreviated version of the third act of the "Sleeping Beauty" ballet. "Sleeping Beauty's Wedding" allows Studio 4 Artistic Director Tammie Lee to continue her mission to "open the public's eyes to classic ballet in the Mother Lode."
"I have always wanted to do something from 'Sleeping Beauty,'" Lee said. "I just didn't know if we were ready as a company. This act of the ballet has many lead characters and requires many strong dancers on pointe. I waited until I felt confident that the company could do it."
The production features many colorful original costumes of storybook characters by Jeanne Saylor. The music is by Tchaikovsky, who also composed the music to "The Nutcracker."
The show is appropriate for all ages. Tickets are $10 for adults; $5 for children 12 and under, available at the box office, cash or check only. For more information, call Lee at 728-5347.
