The Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet will star in the opening concert of the 2013 "Ovations" performing arts series at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Bret Harte High School Theatre at 323 Highway 49 in Angels Camp. Art

Entries for the 26th annualInFocus Photography Competition and Exhibition will be accepted from noon to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the former home of the Central Sierra Arts Council at 193 S. Washington St. in downtown Sonora. The show will run from Jan. 18 to Feb. 16. An awards ceremony and reception will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26. "Second Saturday Art Night," an evening of music and art in stores, restaurants and galleries, will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday in downtown Sonora.Admission is free. For more information call 532-7697 or visit www.sonoranightout.com .

Columbia College will present the "Animate Objects" art show through Jan. 24 in the Manzanita Rotunda on campus. Viewing hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. The exhibit includes sculpture by Sifu Berchtold and Marta Magistrali and paintings by Diana Boyd.

"Art in the Library," a rotating exhibit at the Tuolumne County Library at 480 Greenley Road in Sonora, will feature the oil paintings of Diana Eppler in January and February. For January, the focus will be on landscapes and local scenes. February will feature Eppler's animals and contemporary western art. For more information, call 533-5507.

Lorna Hunt and Inge Zumwalt are the Mother Lode Art Association's featured artists for January. Their paintings can be seen in the front windows of Servente's at 64 S. Washington St. in Sonora.

Arts of Bear Valley featured artists for January are Nancy Macomber and Judy Boles. Boles is an oil painter who paints local landscapes and scenery. Macomber is a watercolorist who paints realism and abstract in acrylics and mixed media. Their works can be seen in the Window Gallery in the Meadowmont Shopping Center in Arnold.

EVENTS

The Tuolumne County Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. today at the Tuolumne County Library on Greenley Road in Sonora. Guest speaker will be Tom Scesa, chief engineer for Tuolumne Utilities District, who will discuss "Tuolumne County Ditch System Sustainability Project." Admission is free.

The Kiwanis Club of Greater Sonora will hold an Open Air Market from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in the Mono Village Center in East Sonora. For more information, call Al Smith at 532-0140.

The Copperopolis Community Center, established in 1940, will present the 27th annual "First Tasting of the Year" for Calaveras County wineries from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Historic Armory at 695 Main St. in Copperopolis. Tickets are $15, including an engraved souvenir wine glass, unlimited wine tasting and hors d'oeuvres. All ticket sales include a donation to restore and maintain the Historic Old Church and Armory buildings, historical archive preservation and the history programat Copperopolis Elementary School. The La Grange Odd Fellows of LaFayette Historical Lodge 65 will serve Breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. Sunday at the Odd Fellows Hall on the main street of La Grange. Biscuits and gravy, sausage, scrambled eggs, French toast and beverages will be served for $6.The meals are served on the second Sunday of each month. The Northern Mariposa County History Center will sponsor a Pancake Breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. Sunday at the Old Schoolhouse on Broadway in Coulterville. Pancakes, eggs, ham or sausage, fruit and beverage will be served for $5 for adults, $3 for children, or $15 for a family of two adults and two children. The Aronos Research Women's Club will make Valentine's for Meals on Wheels Recipients beginning at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, at the clubhouse at 37 E. Elkin St. in downtown Sonora.The public is welcome to help recycle greeting cards for delivery to the homebound. For more information, call Mary Jane Moffett at 533-8664.

Story Time for children is held at 10:30 a.m. every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at the Tuolumne County Library at 480 Greenley Road in Sonora. For more information, call 533-5507. The Tuolumne branch at 18636 Main St. holds story time at 11 a.m. each Friday. The Groveland branch, at 18990 Highway 120, offers stories at 10:30 a.m. Friday.
