The Sonora Wildcats took six wrestlers to the American River Classic at Rio Americano High School on Saturday and had five reach the semifinals.
Evan Williams, wrestling in the 285-pound weight class, Jack Trent (170) and Lucas Pallante (152) led the Wildcats with third-place finishes and each won four out of five matches.
Cal Johnson (126) and Bryce Sanguinetti (145) each won three of five matches and finished in fourth place. Sanguinetti lost his semifinal match in the last three seconds.
“We continued to wrestle well as a group showing improvement and a lot of heart,” said Wildcat head coach Jon Abernathy. “Evan wrestled better than he ever has competing with two very good heavyweights, even though he gives away weight (229 pounds). The two that placed higher than Evan were both past State qualifiers. Lucas dominated the four matches he won and Jack wrestled well again making up for inexperience with athletic ability.”
