Wildcats wary of Pitman trickery

By KEVIN SAULS

Sonora High School's ball-hawking secondary had better be on its collective toes tomorrow night when the undefeated Wildcats play football against Pitman at 7:15 p.m. at Turlock High School's Joe Debely Stadium.

"Pitman runs a lot of trick plays," Sonora coach Robert Cendro said. "They're good at it. They use them against everybody and they're effective."

Quarterback Colin Kaepernick is the triggerman for the Pride (3-2-1, 1-2 Valley Oak League), and as often as not, running back Anthony Harding is on the business end of the trickery.

Kaepernick is the sixth-rated passer in the southern half of the Sac-Joaquin Section with 49 completions in 82 attempts for 803 yards with eight touchdowns and only one interception. His statistics compare favorably with those of Sonora's No. 2-rated Jeff Hess (54-for-90, 980 yards, eight touchdowns, one interception).

Harding is among the leaders in rushing (64 carries, 467 yards, 7.3 average, three touchdowns), receiving (17 catches, 262 yards, 15.4 average, four touchdowns) and scoring (seven touchdowns, two two-point conversions, 46 points).

Keeping an eye on them for the Wildcats (6-0, 3-0 VOL) will be cornerbacks Nate Baker and Colby Jamar and safeties Zeke Delgado, Gary Tuttle and Dennis Carrillo. They've combined for 14 of Sonora's staggering total of 15 interceptions.

Baker has eight of them to lead Central California south of Sacramento, and Jamar returned one of his two last week for a 40-yard touchdown in Sonora's 31-13 road victory over East Union of Manteca.

"Our secondary does a real good job going to the ball," Cendro said.

The Wildcats' last line of the defense is greatly helped by the tackles, ends and linebackers, who generate a pass rush can be fearsome.
