Wildcat volleyers win 2nd straight to start VOL

The Sonora Wildcat volleyball team won its second straight match to start Valley Oak League play on Monday at Bud Castle Gym.

The Wildcats beat league foe Kimball 3-0 (25-9, 25-6, 25-15) in its last season in the VOL before heading to the Mother Lode League.

“Kimball was an athletic team that still needs some polish in their play,” said Wildcat head coach Kim Evans. “Their setter ran an effective offense, and I feel that they will finish in the top half of the VOL. They fought hard and never gave up.”

Kelsie Evans led the Cats with 10 kills. Savannah Lawrence swatted seven and Shannon Friend powered home four.

Bella Bergamaschi had 15 assists, Marcia Chacon seven and Leah Dambacher one.

“I was pleased with our execution, especially on offense in terms of things we have been working on in practice,” Kim Evans said. “We were happy with the flow of the first two sets.”

Lawrence proved tough at the net, recording four total blocks (two solo, two assisted). Kelsie Evans and Angel Gardella had a solo block and two assisted blocks, respectively.

“Kelsie and Savannah hit .500 and .467, respectively, which is like a batting average,” Kim Evans said. “They really took care of business up at the net with putting the ball away.”

Bailey Henington had a team-high 14 digs. Chacon and Dambacher both added five each.

Dambacher was strong at the serving line with four aces. Bergamashi fired two aces, and Chacon and MaKenzee Hope had one apiece.

“Overall, this was another great team effort,” Kim Evans said. “I made a lot of subs in the third set, and my team had a hard time making the necessary adjustments to keep the rhythm going, but in the end, we just had too much fire power.”

Sonora will host VOL rival Weston Ranch on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Bud Castle Gym.

JV—Coming off its first Valley Oak League win last Wednesday against Sierra, the Wildcats continued its winning ways, beating Kimball 2-0 on Monday at Bud Castle Gym.

Frosh—The Sonora Wildcat freshman volleyball team defeated Valley Oak League foe Kimball 2-1 (26-28, 25-17, 15-11) on Monday at Bud Castle Gym.
