Wildcat volleyers top Frogs in preseason finale |
The Sonora Wildcats defeated host Bret Harte on Tuesday night in a Foundation game, the final preseason game for both squads. The Cats won in straight sets, 25-18, 27-25 and 25-19. “Bret Harte is a very well-coached team with some outstanding hitters,” said Sonora head coach Kim Evans. “Once they sort a few things out, they will be very hard to stop.” As for her Cats, Evans said, “We were able to withstand their attacks and keep the ball in play and chip away at their big-block and big hitters. I think our hitters and our defense made some really smart plays. “It was nice to see some of what we work on so hard in practice translate over into the match. We still have plenty to work on in practice but overall we did some really nice things. We played very well as a team and everyone contributed to this victory.” For Sonora, Abby Runte had seven kills, Mariah Armstrong six, Gracia Gagnon five and Anneka Pisula three. Maddie Pallante had 10 digs, Runte nine and Gagnon six. In serve receive, Pallante was 20-25 and Runte 10-13. Cassidy Knowles had a solo block, and Bryanna Owens and Mariah Armstrong had two block-assists. In serves, Runte was 16-17 with an ace, Gagnon was 10-11 with two aces and Pisula 9-9 with an ace. In setting, Pisula had 17 assists, Elise Amend had eight, and Maria Chacon two. Sonora begins regular-season play with a cross-county battle against Summerville today at 6 p.m. |
