The Sonora Wildcats clinched a volleyball playoff berth on Tuesday with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-17) victory over Kimball at Bud Castle Gym.
Even though the Cats are in postseason, they covet their sixth straight Valley Oak League title and are one game behind arch-rival Oakdale with two games remaining.
Sonora will host Oakdale on Monday at 6 p.m. with the VOL title on the line — if the Cats can get by East Union in Manteca today.
“Tonight was a big win for us,” said Wildcat head coach Kim Evans. “Kimball is third place in the VOL and this win secures us at least a second-place finish and a guaranteed playoff game. Kimball is a very athletic team and can hit the ball well when they are in system. We read their hitters well which gave us a good block on most of their hits. Our defense is doing really nice things with Leah (Dambacher) and Bailey (Henington) back there and Bella (Bergamaschi) and Maria (Chacon) continue to run a well balanced offense.”
For Sonora (11-1 VOL), Mariah Armstrong, Shannon Friend and Savannah Lawrence each had six kills, Bella Bergamaschi had nine assists and served for two aces, Chacon had six assists and seven digs, Henington had 11 digs, Angela Gardella and Sarah Thompson each had a block solo and two block assists, Cassidy Knowles had two block assists, Dambacher had five digs and nine serve receives and Ali Pelfrey served for three aces.
