The Tuolumne Typhoon under-14 girls' soccer team has completed the Sacramento "Off The Wall" indoor season and will advance to next week's playoffs as the top seed.
Playing two games on the final evening (other teams only had one), and forced to play with no substitutes, Briana West, Danielle Garvin, Molly Taylor, Sloan Hanna, Courtney Opie, and goalkeeper Rebekah Garvin used a patient strategy.
It paid off in victories of 4-0 over the Roseville Flames and a 2-2 tie with the Citrus Heights Cyclones.
Hanna scored two goals, Opie and Danielle Garvin tallied one goal each, and Taylor and West controlled the defensive end against Roseville.
In the Citrus Heights game, Hanna and Garvin again scored and the repeatedly turned back the attack of fresh waves of Cyclone substitutes.
Alexa Janicki, Shayla Collie, and Hayley Banks also are on the Typhoon, but missed the games because of illness.
The Typhoon finished atop its 11-team division by outscoring the opposition 21-5 while compiling a record of 4-1-1 for 13 points one more than Elk Grove and two more than the Cyclones.
On the outdoor scene, the Typhoon in its fifth season together ended the Dennis Olsen League with a second place finish and is preparing for a chance at the 48-team State Cup tournament March 28 and 29.
The two top teams will advance to a regional tournament, after which are the national finals. Other teams members who will compete in the State Cup are Abby Barton, Laura Holland, Caroline Leonardo, Heather Perez, Jessica Tune, Leanne Wentworth, and Marta Young. The team is coached by Buzz Garvin, Steve Wentworth and Doug West.
The Typhoon represents Tuolumne County Youth Soccer.
