Title! Redskin wrestlers capture MLL crown

The Calaveras Redskins captured their sixth consecutive Mother Lode League championship by defeating arch-rival Bret Harte 39-30 on Wednesday night in Angels Camp.
“Bret Harte is much improved and hats off to them,” said Redskins co-head coach Mark Bowe. “They wrestled hard. Of course, it’s not completely over. We’ll have our MLL meet coming up (Feb. 10 at Linden) and there’s another title there for the taking.”
On Wednesday, Bret Harte’s Caleb Storey (106) gave the Bullfrogs a 6-0 lead with a pin.
Redskin RJ Schulze (113) tied up the meet with a win by pin.
At 120, Redskin Collin Kulp won by decision (9-6) and Calaveras led 9-6 overall.
Bret Harte’s Lyford Morris (126) then won by pin and the Frogs led 12-9.
At 132, Redskin Jerry Elsey won by a 6-2 decision to tie up the meet.
Bret Harte’s Giovanni Murrillo (138) won by pin and the Frogs led 18-12.
At 145, Redskin Justin Brown won by decision (9-3) and Bret Harte’s lead was 18-15.
Redskin Nick Vath (152) won by points in overtime and the meet was tied 18-18.
Bret Harte’s Tanner Sherrow (160) won by pin and the Frogs led 24-18.
At 170, Redskin Robbie Weaver won by pin and the meet was tied 24-24.
At 182, Bret Harte’s Luke Brewer won by pin and the Frogs led 30-24.
Redskin Tony Williams (195) won by decision (8-4) and cut Bret Harte’s lead to 30-27.
At 220, Derek Rittenhouse won by pin and Calaveras led 33-30.
At heavyweight, Redskin Noah Shelgren won by pin and clinched the championship for Calaveras.
“Our kids rose up and met the challenge tonight,” said Bowe. “We had some injuries and some recent sickness and I sure don’t want to make too big of a deal about that because Bret Harte, I’m sure, is in the same boat as us with regards to all that.
“But the bottom line is our kids did have to overcome some adversities and we asked them to compete like warriors tonight and that’s exactly what they did. They showed a lot of pride and we, as coaches, are proud of them.”
