Senior Dan Monroe became the third Tioga High School golfer to earn Most Valuable Player honors when he finished fourth in the Southern League Tournament yesterday at Stevinson Ranch.
Monroe shot a round of 87 on the long, tough, par-72 course on a windy, slightly rainy day to beat Modesto Christian's Ty Caskey the only player who could overtake him by one stroke. Thus, Monroe joined Donnie Blaumeseur and Tim Cravens in Tioga's MVP ranks. They were both three-time MVPs.
"This is the seventh time in our 12 years one of our players has been MVP," Tioga coach Gregg Bernheisel. "We've had our share of them."
Monroe and teammate Jason Wiercinski qualified for Monday's Small-School Sub-Section Tournament at Diablo Grande in Patterson. Turlock Christian, Central Catholic of Modesto and Modesto Christian qualified as teams.
Tioga was fifth yesterday with a score of 493. Turlock Christian, the host team, won at 446.
