MURPHYS Tioga High School opened its 2001 soccer season Thursday with a 4-0 victory over Rite of Passage at Feeney Park.
The Timberwolves went into the game looking to establish their defense and got strong performances in that are from freshmen Chris Soto and Adam Schone and junior Sean Rogers on the back line. Junior sweeper J.R. Morgan repeatedly stalled Rite of Passage attacks and goalie Chris Waggle had six saves one at point blank range.
Our team communication still needs work, but it wasnt too bad for the first time, said Tioga coach Bob Roman.
The Tioga offense was spotty, according to Roman, who said uneven field conditions played a part. In the temporary absence of last years leading scorer, Jordan Thomas, Keith Dempsey stepped up and scored three goals in the sixth minute, assisted by Danny Monroe, in the 58th minute from Soto and in the 77th unassisted.
Monroe scored the other Tioga goal, assisted by Dempsey, in the 29th minute.
Roman said Rite of Passage was very spirited and hustling, reflecting great potential as they play together more.
The T-Wolves next game is Wednesday at Delhi.
