GROVELAND The Tioga High School girls basketball team tasted victory for the first time, drubbing Merced Christian 48-11 in a non-league game Friday at Tenaya School.
Andrea Powell scored 21 points for the Timberwolves, who took a 16-5 lead in the first quarter and rolled to a 30-7 halftime lead. Colleen Alder added nine points.
Monday night, the T-Wolves returned to Mountain Valley League play and were handed a 51-36 home loss by first-place Turlock Christian (4-0, 8-9). The Eagles pounded the ball inside to Liz Nieuwsma and Shonda Hopkins, who scored 22 and 16 points, respectively.
Powell scored 21 again for Tioga, hitting three 3-pointers.
We handled ourselves a lot better, said Tioga coach Jim McClure. Were starting to get some offense and were playing a lot better defense. If we could shoot the ball we would have played right with (Turlock).
Tioga, 1-12 overall, is back in action Friday at Stockton Christian, with tipoff set for 6 p.m.
