The Bret Harte Bullfrogs had three out of seven wrestlers reach title matches at the Morning Star Invitational in Los Banos on Saturday, with Geovanni Murrillo taking home the gold in the 145-pound weight class.
Murillo defeated fellow Bullfrog Aaron Richey by a 12-4 decision to claim the crown.
Bullfrog grappler Caleb Storey, wrestling in the 113-pound weight class, lost his final match to Oakdale’s Nico Colunga 14-2.
Bret Harte’s Justin Barnes (160) made it to the semifinals where he lost a close match 5-4.
Bullfrog wrestlers John Rohrabaugh (170), Jesse Acedo (220) and Logan Turner (285) all went 1-2.
Overall, Bret Harte finished 14th out of 27 teams.
The Bullfrogs travel to Reno this week to compete in the Sierra Nevada Classic on Thursday and Friday.
“We will be tested, but I feel in order to beat the best you have to go to where the best are,” said Bret Harte head coach Alonzo Nalls. “After these next couple of weeks, when we start league and things start to settle down a bit, we can heal up and go into the second half of our season.”
The Bullfrogs open Mother Lode League play on Jan. 3 against Amador.
