S’ville’s Brennan, Quirie place at Turlock

Two Summerville wrestlers placed at The Bulldog Classic on Saturday in Turlock.

Senior Andrew Brennan at 126 pounds claimed second place with a 2-1 record, and junior 152-pounder Humphrey Quirie tied for third.

Brennan, the tournament’s No. 2 seed, received a first-round bye, pinned Livingston’s Bryan Negrete in 1:45 in his first match.

In Brennan’s semifinal matchup, he took down Kenny Loehner, of Monache, 15-0 by technical fall.

“This was a tough semifinal match, and he went out there and completely dominated,” said Summerville head coach Jordan DePaoli. “It was real positive for Andrew to win that handily. He was real successful on top and controlled the match on his feet with several takedowns.”

However, in the championship showdown, Brennan was defeated by Sheldon’s Ethan Brewer 13-9. Brewer was a state qualifier in 2013, and was this tournament’s No. 1 seed.

“It was back and forth,” DePaoli said. “Andrew had the lead after the first round. A couple of things didn’t go his way in the second round. He learned a lot from this match. It was a match that could have gone either way. He just came up on the short end, but he feels confident he could win those type of matches in the future.”

Quirie at 152 finished third with a 4-1 record.

“He lost his second match, and from there, he went on a tear and won three in a row,” DePaoli said. “His second-round loss was an eye opener for him. Humphrey just had a down match. It was a match that Humphrey learned that you can’t take any time off. But it’s good to know that with Humphrey, a loss like that, is not going to put him down.”

Wrestling well for the Bears was J.T. McCready at 132 pounds. The sophomore went 3-2 and was one match away from placing.

“It was his first tournament of the year,” DePaoli said. “For him to get three under his belt was good for him.”

Summerville hits the road for its Mother Lode League opener against Argonaut at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Jackson.

In junior varsity action, Elisha Flores at 195 pounds placed first with a perfect 3-0 mark at the Escalon JV Tournament. Colbie Dibble, a 106 pounder, was fourth, winning three of his five matches.
