Summerville Bear pitcher Logen Foster earned a 3-2 win in the eighth inning Friday against the Bret Harte Bullfrogs in Angels Camp.
“It was a hard fought game,” said Summerville head coach Larry Gold. “They held us scoreless for three innings and we finally scratched out a run in the fourth.”
Bret Harte matched Summerville with a run in the home half of the fourth inning. The Bears got another run in the fifth frame which the Bullfrogs again answered to tie the game 2-2.
Bear pitcher Jonathan Olsen and Bullfrog pitcher Mike McCullough kept the sixth inning scoreless on both sides.
“I thought Jonathan threw a good game,” Gold said of the Summerville starter who pitched six innings. “He allowed only one earned run and we didn’t give him much run support.”
McCullough took the loss after pitching a complete game in which he fanned four batters and allowed only one earned run.
Foster took over for Olsen and held the Bullfrogs in the seventh and eighth innings for the win.
“Foster came in and did a good job closing the game and getting the win for us,” Gold said. “I was pleased about the pitching, but I expected us to hit the ball a little bit better.”
Summerville out hit the Bullfrogs 6-4.
For the Bears, Bryce Farrell went 2 for 3 with a double and two runs. Joey Brocchini and Brendan Brick each doubled.
Bullfrogs Kyle Bennett, Cameron Herrin, John Rohrabaugh and Darrell Lucas all singled and Chad Testa batted in a run for Bret Harte.
The Bullfrogs remain winless in the MLL while Summerville advances to 7-4 and is tied for second place with Calaveras. Only three teams advance to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV Baseball Championships with four games left in the 2013 regular season.
Summerville hosts Argonaut on Wednesday and Calaveras on Friday.
“This is a crucial week for us,” Gold said. “We look at both as must-win games.”
