S’ville softball tops BV Christian

Summerville pitcher Shelby Conklin tossed a complete game and the Bears’ softball team won its first game of the year, 7-3, over Big Valley Christian on Monday in Tuolumne.

Conklin recorded seven strikeouts and walked just three batters.

“She came out the first inning a little shaking,” said Summerville head coach Ben Watson. “They got two runs, a couple hits and three walks, and after that, she settled down. She had no walks after that.”

After Big Valley Christian took a 2-1 lead after the first inning, Conklin went on to pitch five straight scoreless inning before the Lions scored a late run in the final inning.

Summerville’s Sierra Engle smacked an RBI single in the bottom of the second to tie the game at two.

Then in the third, the Bears scored three runs and added another in the fourth.

Bear senior Caitie Egger powered an RBI double in the fifth inning to give Summerville a commanding 7-2 lead.

“Catie Egger and Sierra were able to come through with key hits and RBI,” Watson said. “We were able to get people in scoring position and score. It was kind of nice to score in each of the first five innings.”

Egger batted a perfect 2 for 2 and Engle was 2 of 3. Conklin finished with an RBI on 2 of 4 hitting. Kayla Brick also went 2 for 4 and Lydia Vass, Kylee Sandoval and Sydney Owens all were 1 of 3.

“I thought that we played better,” Watson said. “It’s just one game, but I thought we played good defense. I was happy with the way we were able to sacrifice and move runners.”

Summerville (1-4) hits the road today when it plays at Ripon. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.

“Our defense has improved over this weekend,” Watson said. “We have a long way to go, and hopefully, we’re going in the right direction.”
