Bret Harte’s Kaylee Sedler led the Bullfrog girls’ cross country team to the Sub-Section Division IV title on Saturday at Frogtown. The team will now head to the Section meet this Friday in Folsom will a full head of steam.
And for the senior Sedler, this was in her and her teams’ plans the whole time.
“Even before the season started, during summer, we were talking about winning a section title,” said Sedler. “We’ve been plotting and planning — it’s one of our main goals this season. We’re really excited about the chance. And then we want to go to State.”
Sedler ran to a fifth-place finish with a time of 19:47 on the 3.1-mile hilly Angels Camp-course.
“I wasn’t real happy with the race,” said Sedler. “Earlier this year at our invitational, I ran a 19:26 and that was pretty good.”
Sedler led the pack at one point because the pace did not suit her.
“I don’t like being in the pack too much,” said Sedler. “My freshman and sophomore years I had slow starts. So now if it’s not the pace I want, I’ll go out front.”
Also going to sections for the Bret Harte girls are Katharine Aiton (14th, 20:49), Hannah Cantrell (21st, 21:13), Madison Ward (25th, 21:32), Rachel Spellenberg (26th, 21:35) and Jessie Evans (32nd, 21:43).
There were 133 competitors. Bret Harte scored 77 points while Riverbank (111) was second and Ripon (124) was third).
Eventually passing Sedler were Summerville’s Kristen Turner and Sonora’s Samantha Smith to finish second and third, respectively. Turner (19:13) and Smith (19:29) qualified as individuals for the Section meet.
Sonora Wildcat Clancy McConnell set the pace for the Division IV boys, finishing in first place with a time of 16:40, to win by 7 seconds.
“Clancy looked great from the very start of the race,” said Wildcat head coach Glenn Bass whose team finished in seventh place and qualified for the Section meet.
“It was a great race — I ran really smart compared to some of the races I’ve run this season,” said McConnell. “I was up late the night before because of band and the football game, but I wanted to make sure we qualified for the Section meet, so I want all out just like my teammates.”
Also for Sonora, Matthew Myers finished 31st with a time of 18:20, Kahale Warring was 49th (18:43), Sean Brennan was 54th (18:53), Brandon Borba was 63rd (19:05), Shaan French Jr. was 67th (19:08) and Tyler Sommerfeld was 69th (19:12).
But just getting to the Section meet is not going to be good enough — the Cats are after a little more.
“As long as our No. 1 runner Steven (Grolle) can go all out and I can keep up with him, I think we have a good shot at a section title. I would love to have the whole team qualify for the State meet.”
Grolle participated in the Sub-Section meet but ran with an injury. He finished in 100th (20:01) out of 170 runners.
“This will probably be his worst time of his entire high school career,” said Bass. But he’s hopeful Grolle will be healthy for Friday.
For Warring, it was his first ever 5k high school race and French set a personal best by 23 seconds and improved at Frogtown by 1:36.
The Bullfrog boys’ team, led by Kyle Hovey and Kevin Maurer, finished in sixth place and will compete on Friday.
Hovey finished in 15th plce with a time of 17:35 and Maurer was 18th in 17:42.
Also for Bret Harte, Joe Hollett was 30th (18:16), Eli Cardiel was 34th (18:23), Jared Seider was 46th (18:41 and Thomas Crawford was 81st (19:19).
