Summerville hoopsters hold successful 'Fun-Raiser'

The Summerville Bears girls’ varsity basketball team held a successful fundraiser on Saturday in Tuolumne.
As part of its 100-year celebration of Summerville basketball, the Bears girls’ varsity hosted two games for men.
The first game was an over-40 contest between former players from Sonora High and Summerville.
In that contest, Sonora defeated Summerville 67-54. Sonora was led in scoring by Lloyd Longeway (class of 1998) with 24 points and Greg Smith (‘01) with 14.
For Summerville, Gabe Carreo (class of ‘91) scored 11 points, Brandon Walker (‘92) scored three points, Jeremy Peterson (‘99) scored 14 points, Noah Milbourn (‘93) scored five points and Dan Mainvile (‘91) and Josh Milbourn (‘90) each scored four points.
Summerville won the Under-40 contest 71-56.
In that contest, former Bears Gabe Wingo (‘95) scored eight points, Jesse Oliva (‘00) scored nine points, Kris Keezer (‘00) 14 points and Mike Oliva (‘98) 10 points. 2011 All-Area Co-Player of the Year honoree Jared English scored 11 points.
For Sonora, Brenden Evans, who earned 2009 All-Area Player of the Year honors, scored 20 points and threw down some crowd-pleasing dunks. Also for Sonora, Taylor Thrift (class of ‘08) scored 15 points.
In between games, Erline and Marlin Heldstab were honored for their over-70 years combined of service to Summerville High School.
Marlin has coached football for 37 years and basketball for 36 years. He was a four-sport letterman when he attended Summerville as a student. He coached the freshman basketball team in 2008 to a perfect 26-0 record.
Erline began her service to Summerville in 1965. Amongst her many duties, she served as school receptionist and was also secretary for Summerville’s legendary basketball coach Marlen Ronten when he served as athletic director.
When introduced on Saturday, both Erline and Marlin Heldstab received a standing ovation from the crowd.
"I want to thank everybody for their participation in this event," said Bears girls’ varsity coach Dave Woods. "Everybody had a great time and all the players from both schools said that they hoped we’d keep doing this every year."
