Speedy swimmers Slater, Nersesian set pace for TCA |
By ERICA WAELTY For The Union Democrat Ashley Nersesian and Sammie Slater, of Tuolumne County Aqautics, have taken the central valley by storm over the last few months, consistently finishing at the top of their age group. The 11-year old Nersesian and 12-year old Slater have competed throughout the region, improving their times and achieving new time standards. The teammates took their friendly competition to Merced in April to swim in their first long course meet of the summer season. Nersesian excelled in the longer-distance events, swimming the 800 freestyle for the first time and finishing fourth. She also improved by six seconds in her 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, edging out Slater by one place. Slater stood out in her 200 IM, improving by 12 seconds and placing sixth in her age group. The girls traveled to Contra Costa College in May for another long-course competition against bigger Bay Area teams. Nersesian and Slater were very competitive with the more experienced athletes. The girls both swam the 50 freestyle, 100 backstroke and 400 freestyle. Nersesian’s best event of the day was her 400 freestyle where she dropped several seconds and narrowly missed her far western time standard. While Slater again showed her sprinting strength and achieved a new AA time standard in her 50 freestyle. Nersesian also went to Fresno over Memorial Day weekend for the Clovis Memorial Swim Meet. While Nersesian finished in the middle of her age group, her times still showed improvement, especially in her 200 freestyle and 200 IM. Numerous other Tuolumne County Aquatics swimmers have been contending throughout the region. Katherine Hohne, 15, Teri Wells, 17, and Kelsey Burr, 9, raced in the Intermountain Classic in Carson City over Memorial Day Weekend. Burr was the weekend standout with a new Junior Olympic time standard in her 100 freestyle. Sarkis Nersesian and Megan Slater, both 8, have also stayed busy, and not just watching their older siblings. Sarkis improved by almost 20 seconds in his 100 breaststroke and another nine seconds in his 50 backstroke. While Slater, swam in her first long course meet, finishing third in her 50 backstroke and fourth in her 50 freestyle flights. |
