Sonora topples Atwater

By KEVIN SAULS

Sonora High School led for all but 83 seconds of a 58-28 girls' basketball victory over Atwater on Tuesday night at Bud Castle Gym.

A 3-pointer by senior guard Nicki Rodriguez gave the Wildcats (3-4) a 3-2 edge with 5:22 left in the first quarter and they went on to lead 17-8 after one quarter, 34-14 at halftime and 48-18 at the end of three quarters.

Senior forward Jessica Peterson made a triple of her own in the first quarter and finished with a game-high 22 points. She also ripped down a game-high 12 rebounds.

"We all played together tonight," Peterson said after the game. "Everybody made a contribution."

Coach Charmon Logan agreed.

"Our bench did a nice job," Logan said. "A lot of players went in and contributed in one way or another."

All 10 Wildcats scored, with guard Lynnyatte Jordan and center Nichole Horvath putting in eight points apiece, Rodriguez seven, forward Megan Webbon four, forward Kayla Brawley, guards Haley Hohengarten and Kayla Rodgers and forward Aino Kalske two each and forward Cammy Fumar one.

One of the biggest cheers of the night went up for Kalske, an exchange student from Finland, when she scored on a nice little turnaround bank shot off a bounce pass from Fumar with 12 seconds left.

Rodriguez dished five assists, Jordan and Hohengarten three apiece and Fumar, Brawley, Rodgers and Peterson two each, while Horvath grabbed five rebounds and Hohengarten four.

Atwater (0-3) got six points apiece from Yuritee Torres, Cassandra Berlanga and Karla Thurman and seven rebounds from Sierra Curiel. The Falcons got pounded on the boards, 33-15, getting only one rebound in the third quarter.

Sophomores — Sonora (5-2) jumped to an 11-0 lead and beat Atwater 45-33 behind 11 points and eight rebounds by Kathleen Diaz, eighth points and nine rebounds by Amber Hoskins, eight points and seven rebounds by Julie Ross and nine rebounds by Haley McColloch.

Freshmen — Erica Chabot had eight points and eight rebounds for Sonora (4-3) in a 38-28 loss. Ashley Kersey had four points and two steals, and Courtney Paterson four points and 10 rebounds.
