After sweeping Ripon 3-0 last week, Sonora drubbed Escalon 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-11) in front of the faithful fans at Bud Castle Gym.
Ripon advanced to the Elite Eight of the Division IV Championships last year and Escalon reached the Final Four, along with the Wildcats. Sonora lost to Ripon last year but defeated Escalon.
“We battled hard for this win,” said Wildcat head coach Kim Evans. “We played extremely scrappy defense and had an aggressively controlled offense. Escalon matched our intensity and was unwilling to give up which made us earn every single point. We had some of the longest rallies in that gym I have ever seen as a head coach. Fortunately, we came out on top of the majority of those rallies. They are a very well-coached and competitive team and the scores do not reflect how close this match was.”
Wildcat setters Maria Chacon and Kiana Pisula combined for 25 assists and seven digs each.
“Maria and Kiana ran a well executed offense and also made some great defensive plays,” Evans said.
Also for Sonora, Savannah Lawrence and Shannon Friend each smacked nine kills, Angela Gardella added five kills, a solo block and an assisted block, Bailey Henington made 21 digs and also had four assists and Leah Dambacher made 16 digs.
“Savannah hit really well out of the middle tonight,” Evans said. “And we never would have had those long rallies if it wasn’t for Bailey and Leah, who made some amazing defensive plays.”
The Wildcats next will begin their Valley Oak League schedule on Wednesday at home against Sierra at 6 p.m. Sonora is the 7-time defending league champion and is looking for an eight in their final season before moving to the Mother Lode League in 2014.
JV—Sonora lost 2-0.
“It wasn’t our greatest game but everybody got to contribute and do some good things,” said Wildcat head coach Andrea Fray.
For the Wildcats, team captain Kailie Fredrickson served 10-10, had seven assists and two kills, Grace Hernandez served for an ace and had two kills, McKenna Poole served 6-6, had four assists and two kills and Kristin Chormicle had two kills.
Frosh— The Wildcats earned a 2-1 (19-25, 25-23, 16-14) victory over Escalon on Monday at Bud Castle Gym.
For Sonora, Kayla Estrada served 14-17 with 11 aces and Delaney Ditler served 9-10 with two aces.
