Sonora relay team wins VOL title

STOCKTON — Sonora High School's 4x100 boys' relay team won the Valley Oak League championship yesterday at San Joaquin Delta College.

Juniors Nick Baker and Tommy Grove (whose day job is with the baseball team), senior Bryann Turner, and junior Dean Freitas clocked 44.30, a season best by a second-and-a-half.

Grove also finished second and Freitas fifth in the 200-meter dash in 23.09 and 24.20, respectively; Grove ran second in the 100 in 11.36; and Baker, Freitas and Turner teamed up with Ryan MacDonald to take fifth in the 4x400 relay in 3:44.59.

Also for the Wildcats, MacDonald won the high jump at 5-10; Jeff Hess took second in the long jump at 19-11 3-4 (2 1/2 inches out of first); pole vaulters Wes Durnall, Jordan Smith and Carl Bates finished 2-3-4 at 12-6, 12-0 and 11-6 (the latter a personal best); and Brendan Irwin and Nate Baker finished fifth and sixth in the triple jump at 39-0 and 38-9.

For the varsity girls, Angela Pinocchio finished second in the pole vault at 9-6, Ashley McClung was fifth in the 800 in 3:10.14, and Krysta Sergent was fifth in the high jump at 4-8 and sixth in the long jump at 13-9.

Varsity qualifiers move on to the Sub-Section 1 Trials Wednesday at Modesto Junior College.
