Sonora golfers win on tiebreaker

PATTERSON — Sonora High School kept its chances of capturing the Valley Oak League boys' golf championship alive yesterday by winning the final regular season tournament at Diablo Grande.

The Wildcats tied with first-place Oakdale at 419, but won a sixth-man tiebreaker by one stroke. It was sweet payback for Sonora, which lost a one-stroke tiebreaker to the Mustangs in the second VOL tournament last month in Atwater.

Sonora now trails Oakdale by nine points, 77-68, going into the VOL championship tournament Monday, April 28, at Pheasant Run in Chowchilla.

"This gets us within striking distance," Sonora coach Steve Lee said. "We'll need some help, but we can still do it."

Andrew Silva shot a round of 79 on par-72 Diablo Grande to lead Sonora. He finished fourth individual behind medalist Wes Bloodgood from East Union of Manteca (76) and has a big lead in individual all-league points toward Most Valuable Player honors.

Loren Ksiazek shot 80 (15 strokes better than the previous week), Darr Snedeger 84, Brandon Schweitz 86, and Dominic Sarno 90. Kyle Richards' 96 was the winning tiebreaker round.

Before the big VOL tourney, Sonora will travel to Carson City, Nev., for a two-day, two-course tournament at Eagle Valley on April 16 and 17.
