The Sonora Wildcat golfers edged the Bret Harte Bullfrogs and Escalon Cougars in a three-way match Tuesday at Oakdale Golf and Country Club.
The Wildcats’ five best scorers recorded a 228, the Bullfrogs a 234 and Cougars a 242.
Sophomore Billy Kiriluk, who earned All-Valley Oak League as a frosh, and sophomore Brandon Phelan each shot 42 to lead Sonora on the par-36 course. Phelan has picked up the game quickly after first picking up a club a few months ago.
Also for Sonora, junior All-VOL returnee Ethan Farwell fired a 43, junior Kade Barajas carded a 49 and sophomore Sam Mays shot a 55.
The Bullfrogs were led by freshman Colin Casey who shot a 7-over par 43.
Also for Bret Harte, senior Rodney Riner and sophomore Scott Hatfield each shot 45, senior Alex Milward carded a 48 and Harley Langlois a 53.
Milward returns after enjoying a successful junior season where he bested the section in Division V to advance to the Masters tournament.
“I thought we did pretty well today,” said Bullfrog head coach Rich Cathcart. “Oakdale is a tough course, a lot of trees and narrow fairways. If you don’t hit the ball in the fairway, you’re gonna be in trouble.”
The Bullfrogs also competed Monday in the Central Catholic tournament at Del Rio Country Club and finished fourth out of 12 teams.
Milward led the Frogs with a 79 on the par 72 course. He finished fourth overall as an individual.
Also for Bret Harte, Casey fired an 80, Riner an 88, Hatfield a 96 and junior Nicholas Tribble shot a 99.
The Bullfrogs will next play against Ripon and Ripon Christian Thursday at 3:15 p.m. at Spring Creek.
The Wildcats will next host the Calaveras Redskins on Thursday at 3 p.m. at Mountain Springs.
