Sonora falls twice in Lodi baseball tourney

LODI — Sonora High School took a break from the Valley Oak League baseball season yesterday, only to find itself playing a VOL team in the first round of Lodi High's DeBenedetti Tournament.

The result was familiar, a 14-6 loss to East Union of Manteca at Zupo Field. Sonora is 4-5 against non-league opponents, but 1-9 against VOL teams — 0-7 in the league race and 1-2 in tournaments.

The Wildcats led 4-3 after two innings, but fell victim to a five-run rally by East Union (12-5) in the top of the third.

Travis Hendrix and Justin Hart both went 2-for-4 with a double for Sonora, while Nick St. Hillaire went 4-for-6 with a double, and two runs batted in and winning pitcher Frances Sy tripled and scored three times for the Lancers.

Sonora also played Lodi (12-7) last night and lost its ninth straight, 15-2 in five innings.

Shannon Ferrill went 3-for-4 with three doubles and four RBIs, and Justin Steingraber went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs for the Flames.
