The Sonora Wildcats finished 2013 Saturday with a victory and earned third place in Columbia College’s High School Holiday Classic hoops tournament.

Sonora jumped on Escalon early and then hung on to defeat the Cougars 55-47 at Oak Pavilion.

The Wildcats led 19-8 after the first period and rolled to a 35-15 halftime advantage.

The Cougars turned the tables in the third, outscoring the Cats 21-8.

Will Collamer and Kahale Warring each scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Sonora.

Collamer averaged 16 points through three games of the event and earned All-Tournament honors.

Also for Sonora (6-5), Thomas Nelson scored nine points and Kyle Wolfe added seven points and five boards.

The Merced Bears (9-5) won the tournament with an exciting 45-43 victory over the Beyer Patriots (6-7) after scoring just 15 second-half points. Beyer was held to just 18 points over that span.

The Wildcats were sent to the third-place game Friday after falling to the Patriots 60-48.

Beyer methodically outscored Sonora in all four periods 14-12, 16-14, 15-10, 15-12.

Collamer scored a Wildcat-best 13 points, including 5-for-5 from the charity stripe, Warring added 11 and Wolfe eight, all from the line (8-for-9).

Warring grabbed 15 rebounds and Wolfe had six. Matt Howard dished four assists.

The Wildcats now get ready for their farewell season in the Valley Oak League.

Sonora next plays on Tuesday, Jan. 7 against Weston Ranch in Stockton. The Cats will play at Lathrop on Jan. 9 and will host their VOL home opener vs. Sierra, last year’s champion, on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 7:15 p.m.
