Soccer Frogs move into league lead

The Bret Harte High School girls' soccer team moved into sole possession of first place in the Mother Lode League with a 2-0 victory over Argonaut on Friday night at Dorroh Field.

The Bullfrogs (7-2-4, 3-0-1 MLL) are a half-game ahead of two-time defending champion Summerville (11-0-2, 2-0-2), which has tied its last two games — 1-1 with Bret Harte and 0-0 with Amador.

Bret Harte is doing it with defense, as the Bullfrogs have given up only one goal in MLL play.

Bret Harte broke through on offense when a Natalie Kramer corner kick ricocheted off a defender and into the net for her sixth goal and a 1-0 halftime lead.

As has been its habit, Bret Harte dominated the second half and outshot Argonaut 18-0. The Bullfrogs' second goal came when center forward Kathleen Avrit passed to midfielder Julie Lauterbach in front of the goal, where Lauterbach controlled the ball and then knocked it into the right corner of the net for her eighth goal.

Bret Harte coach John Yost credited Chelsea Conrad, playing right midfield and striker at different times, with a key performance.

Bret Harte hopes to get its on-again, off-again (mostly off) track season going this week in the Fresno Relays on Thursday and in the Oakland Invitational at the University of California at Berkeley on Saturday.

Coach Hal Clements is awaiting word on whether any of his athletes have marks fast, far or high enough to qualify for the invitational meets. He's hoping so, because the Bullfrogs haven't been to as many meets as they're accustomed to — mostly because of cancellations and scheduling problems.

Bret Harte got some good marks last Thursday in a Mother Lode League dual meet against Summerville at Dorroh Field, including a time of 5:48 in the girls' 1,600-meter run by Gia Cizmich (in her first try at the event), and a height of 13-4 in the boys' pole vault by Robert Messer.
