Soccer Bears take another from Cats

Megan Reynolds' two goals and one assist led the Summerville High School girls' soccer team past Sonora in a 3-1 win at Dunlavy Field yesterday — its second victory over the Wildcats in six days.

Sonora (4-3-1) opened the scoring with a goal by Haley Hohengarten at the 32-minute mark off a pass from Sheraden Mundy.

The Bears (7-0), who beat Sonora 2-1 in a shootout last Saturday in the first round of the Bret Harte Tournament, rebounded from the 1-0 deficit with two goals in a span of two minutes.

"Sonora took the early initiative … (while) we were adjusting to the switch from our usual 4-4-2 formation to a 3-5-2 for this game to improve our midfield control over what it was in our game with Sonora last week," Summerville coach Jim Frazier said.

Reynolds tied the game at 1-1 with a goal at the 37-minute mark off a corner kick that caught Sonora keeper Kim Lorenzen by surprise.

Two minutes later, Jordan Vemillion took a long, looping pass from Reynolds in front of the Sonora goal and headed it into the net for a 2-1 Summerville lead.

"We played extremely flat as well as mostly flat-footed," Sonora coach Rick Mogg said. "Our squad has been recently ravaged by illness and it clearly showed in our energy level."

Reynolds finished up the scoring with a goal off a pass from Kelly Marquardt at the 67-minute mark.

Vermillion and Reynolds also had a goal apiece wiped out by referees' decision.

"Both teams played with a lot of heart which will benefit each in preparing for league play," Frazier said.

Sonora opens the Valley Oak League season with a home game against Buhach Colony of Atwater on Tuesday, while Summerville visits Livingston on Wednesday in a non-league game. Mother Lode League play begins for the Bears on March 18 against Argonaut in Jackson.
