Megan Reynolds recorded her third straight hat trick, while Shannon Hayes and Jordan Vermillion pumped in two goals apiece as the Summerville High School girls' soccer team trounced Linden 8-0 last night on Thorsted Field in Tuolumne.
Kadi Davies added a goal and seven players recorded assists for Summerville (14-0-2, 5-0-2 Mother Lode League), which posted its largest margin of victory this season. The Bears had beaten Ripon and Argonaut by 7-0 margins.
"I didn't expect this game to be so one-sided," Summerville coach Jim Frazier said. "Linden made us work in our (3-1) win the first round of league play, and I thought we'd be in for a tight game.
"(But) our finishing was excellent, our shot placement was precise and our passing and set plays were very sharp."
After Summerville allowed the Lions two scoring opportunities in the first 10 minutes of action, Hayes put the Bears on top to stay at the 12-minute mark. Taking a lead pass from Vermillion behind the defense, Hayes drove home a shot into the lower left corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead.
Vermillion got her game-high second assist of the game just three minutes later when she fed Reynolds a lead pass, who converted for the first of her three scores and a 2-0 Summerville advantage.
Davis put Summerville ahead 3-0 at halftime when she took a wide pass from Ashley Rice and bounced in a shot over the Linden keepers' head at the 31-minute mark.
"Getting the third goal before halftime was the big lift that helped our confidence going into the second half," Frazier said.
After Reynolds upped the Bears' lead to 4-0 with her second goal of the game off a pass from Bridgette Berry just five minutes into the second half, Summerville failed to dent the scoreboard again for the next 20 minutes before heating up again over the final 13 minutes.
