Soccer Bears, Frogs tie in showdown

The Summerville High School girls' soccer team is still undefeated, but no longer perfect.

After opening the season with 11 straight victories, the Bears (11-0-1, 2-0-1 Mother Lode League) were finally stopped — or at least slowed down — when the Bret Harte Bullfrogs escaped from Tuolumne with a 1-1 tie at Thorsted Field last night.

The tie is not only a small measure of revenge for the Frogs (6-2-4, 2-0-1), who dropped a 2-1 non-league decision to Summerville in the championship game of their own tournament earlier this month, but also keeps them tied with Bears (11-0-1, 2-0-1) atop the MLL standings.

The Frogs also blocked Summerville's pursuit of a perfect MLL campaign in 2002 when they beat the Bears 2-0 in Angels Camp in the third-to-last game of the regular season.

Bret Harte looked like it might make it two league victories in a row over the Bears when it managed to take a 1-0 lead into halftime last night.

Although Summerville kept the ball on Bret Harte's end of the field for most of the first 20 minutes of action, the Bears were unable to convert on any number of scoring opportunities, which opened the door for Bret Harte's Megan Shires.

At the 32-minute mark, Shires broke through the Summerville defense on the left side and launched a point-blank shot at Bears' keeper Kellie Pierce. Pierce blocked the shot, but couldn't control the ball. Shires swooped down on the loose ball, gathered in her own rebound and blew the ball into the back of the net for her team-leading 10th goal.

At the 65-minute mark, Summerville's Kelly Marquardt sent a direct kick at midfield to a leaping JordanVermillion in front of the Bret Harte goal. Vermillion managed to outmaneuver a Frogs' defender in the air and guide the ball past Lee into the back of the Bret Harte net, knotting the game at 1-1.
