Skins edge Bears

The Calaveras Redskins defeated Summerville 6-3 in San Andreas on Friday to avenge their Mother Lode League baseball loss to the Bears in Tuolumne earlier that week.

Calaveras pitcher Wyatt Durham went the distance, striking out two, to pick up his third win of the season.

Calaveras jumped to the early 1-0 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Redskin Anthony Flores that scored Mike Seawell.

Both teams remained without a run until the home half of the fourth inning when the Redskins improved their lead by four runs.

Summerville pitcher Colton Ebbers faced nine batters in that inning alone and gave up two earned runs before Jonathan Olsen took over in the fifth.

“Colton did a good job,” said Summerville head coach Larry Gold. “He gave up just one run in the first inning and faced 11 batters up to the fourth inning.”

The Bears rallied to put their first runs on the board with two in the top of the fifth frame but the Redskins would answer with another. Summerville scored its final run in the sixth.

Calaveras cut down on the eight errors made in Wednesday’s loss to Summerville and only had three Friday. Summerville only made one.

“We (the Bears) had eight hits and they (the Redskins) had 10, so it was pretty evenly-matched, but their hits were more timely,” said Gold. “They also had five stolen bases on six attempts, so they were able to move up on some bases and get some timely hits to get those guys around.”

For Summerville, Bryce Farrell was 2 for 3 while Brendan Brick 2 for 2. Ebbers hit 3 for 4 with two RBIs.

Redskins Jake Souza and Derek Rittenhouse led Calaveras at the plate with a pair of hits and a RBI each. Seawell, Flores and Thomas Boitano each drove in a Redskin run, with Seawell also adding three stolen bases.

The win improves the Redskin record to 5-7 overall and 2-3 in league. This week Calaveras will play a two-game series with Argonaut.

The Redskins will host the Mustangs on Wednesday before the teams face-off at Banner Island in Stockton on Friday.

Meanwhile, Summerville (6-9, 3-2 MLL) preps for a two-game series against Amador this week.

“We know they’ve had some close games and have a pretty good record,” Gold said of the Buffaloes. “They can put the ball in play, so we need to execute both offensively and defensively. We’re gonna go after them like everybody else.”

JV—The Redskins defeated the Bears 12-8.

Calaveras’ Mason Viera had a pair of hits including a double as the Redskins held on for the win Friday.
