Skin tracksters claim D5 crown

The Calaveras girls’ track and field team won the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V Championship on Thursday at Modesto Junior College.

“I’m proud of our team,” said Redskins head coach Doug Avrit. “Winning a section title in Division V is not an easy thing to accomplish because our kids are competing against Division IV athletes — who come from bigger schools — throughout the meet.”

“It’s great that we won the section championship,” said Redskin sophomore Sheridan Loverin. “At the beginning of this season, I don’t think any of us were really thinking about it. But our coach had told us that we had a chance to do this and that helped us with our confidence.”

Loverin finished fourth in the 1600m, sixth in the 800m and was part of the Redskins’ relay team which took fifth in the 4x400m.

Loverin and relay teammates Brittany Kohler, Hannah Hull and Kelly Airola finished in 4:13.67. The Calaveras school record is 4:12.55.

“Our strategy for this relay was for each of us not to use all of our energy in the first 200 meters,” explained Loverin. “We each started using our energy once we got to the 300-meter mark. Chasing the school record also gave us a lot of motivation.”

Also picking up valuable points for Calaveras were discus thrower Brittany Barrett who took fifth with a personal-best toss of 106-6, and Isabella Lohsen who took fifth in the shot put.

Airola tied for fifth in the high jump leaping 4-10.

Hull took second place in the 1600 and, with just a 10-minute break, came back and finished second in the 800.

A sixth-place or better finish last Thursday advanced an individual or relay team on to the Masters Meet which will take place on this Thursday at Elk Grove High School.

The Redskins’ boys’ 4x400m relay team finished sixth on Thursday and will also advance to the Masters. Joe Elliott, Zack Johnson, Macklin Bolton and Kellen Hodgson ran a season-best 3:32.86.
