SUMMERVILLE RUNNERS THIRD, FOURTH; COLUMBIA VOLLEYERS LOSE

FARMINGTON — The Summerville High School boys' and girls' cross country teams finished a distant third and fourth, respectively, at a Mother Lode League meet hosted by Linden at Orvis Ranch yesterday.

"While our times continue to improve and our team running is developing," Summerville coach Wayne DeGennaro said, "we have a ways to go to challenge Calaveras and Bret Harte."

For the third-place boys' team, Arthur Crist's 14th-place finish (20 minutes, 35 seconds) led a tightly-packed group of Bears in the 27-runner race. Also scoring points for Summerville were Ryan Drewery (No. 17, 21:16), Marty Reid (No. 18, 21:35), Thomas Salado-Poor (No. 19, 21:47) and Adam Ferguson (21:55).

With 72 team points, Summerville finished behind Calaveras (25) and Bret Harte (31).

In the girls' race, Lauren Daniels paced the Bears with an 11th-place finish (25:05) Rounding out Summerville's top-five finishers in the 31-runner race were Sara LaTorre (No. 21, 28:20), Cayli Wehmeyer (No. 22, 28:21), Tracy Albuera (No. 24, 29:43) and Rebecca Geissler (No. 27, 30:48).

With 92 team points, Summerville trailed Bret Harte (29), Calaveras (34) and Linden (67).

Frosh-Soph — Lauren Daniels (No. 7, 16:13) and Emma Serianni (No. 8, 16:40) posted top-10 finishes in the girls' race as Summerville (54 points) sandwiched a second-place finish between Bret Harte (15) and Linden (68). Also scoring for the Bearcubs were Jenny Brown (No. 13, 17:49), Natalie Rhorer (No. 15, 18:18) and Stephanie Wurz (No. 18, 18:38).

Sutton Latter (No. 15, 15:47) was the only Summerville runner in the boys' race.

Summerville visits Frogtown in Angels Camp next Wednesday for another MLL meet.

Columbia volleyball

The Claim Jumpers couldn't get it going in their Central Valley Conference opener and lost on the road to Porterville 30-18, 30-12, 30-17.

Melissa Costa had seven kills, Sarah Tait six, Amanda Damm four, Nicole Azevedo three and Brooke Sherry two for Columbia, while Damm and Costa had one block apiece. Also, Costa had seven assists and Sherry seven, and Jaime Dickerson had 13 digs and Valerie Foster eight.
